Gothic Hand Sewing
We will examine documented early clothing sewing techniques. A sampler of stitches will be made and handout of sources and other stitches will be provided. This is a must-have course for authentic costuming. We will also explore ways to give a hand sewn look to machine made garments.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring sewing kit with scissors if possible.

Opus Anglicanum
Opus Anglicanum (English Work) was an embroidery art form produced in Anglo Saxon and Norman England from about 900 - 1500. It was considered an art form similar to paintings, sculpture & stained glass. Silk and metal threads were worked on linen or velvet. Pearls, jewels and beaten gold were added. Split stitch and underside couching are the characteristic stitches. While you stitch on your sampler we will discuss the history and use of Opus Anglicanum in the SCA. A knowledge of basic embroidery is helpful but not required as the stitches are all very basic.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring scissors a small embroidery hoop if they have them. Loaners will also be provided.

Linen, silk and gold threads, pearls, needles will be provided for you to take home and continue your sampler.

Elizabethan Embroidery
Elizabethan embroidery was worked by royalty and the women of the new leisured classes to embellish household goods and clothing. Colored silks and metal threads, jewels, spangles and pearls were worked in intricate stitches for designs from the herbals and gardens of country manors. Small articles such as gloves, books, bags, and hats make ideal guild challenge projects.

This is an intermediate level course where knowledge of couching, chain, stem, satin and back stitches (Holbein)
will be assumed. We will be introduced to long and short satin stitch, detached buttonhole, feather stitch,
and padded embroidery. Some pictures of Elizabethan work and how to set up the background fabric and backing in hoop or frame will be demonstrated. Samplers will be pre-prepared for ease of practice.

Samples of various threads, and their sources, will be available for examination.

Supplies Needed: Stu
dents may bring scissors, small hoops - 5", threads, tapestry and crewel needles if they have them. All materials will be supplied however.

Beginning Black Work
Students will learn about this beautiful and dramatic stitch from the English aspect, and get hands-on experience working a sampler. We will also discuss the different types of ground fabrics and threads which can be used in blackwork, and learn the language of the stitch. DMC floss, tapestry needles, even weave ground fabric, and an
illustrated informational handout with references and pattern graphs will be provided.

Supplies Needed: Students need to bring sewing snips and vision aids if used.

Glove Making
Learn how to make a truly well fitting glove correct for your period. Students will learn the basics of glove making by making their own patterns to fit their hands and then making a glove. Some history of gloves will be included, but since there is much more information available on late SCA period gloves that is what we will make.

We will make cloth gloves, but making leather gloves will be discussed. No previous sewing experience is necessary, but is helpful.

A handout will be provided, this will be on cd unless otherwise requested in advance.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring fabric cutting scissors if they have them.

Gothic Gown Construction
This class will demonstrate how to make a gothic-style fitted gown. Both the straight and curved front methods will be discussed. One method will be demonstrated, but the fitting method is the same for both. If you are not making this dress for yourself, the person the gown is being made for must be present for the fitting.

The method will be demonstrated on one person, but time permitting we may also be able to fit other students.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring their own linen (ideally a tabby - even weave not a twill) approximately 2X their height + 1-1.5 yards for sleeves and sewing equipment.

Setting & Serving the Mediaeval Table CANCELLED
What did a Mediaeval table setting look like? What did the Banquet look like? How was it served? Who served it? We will look at serving vessels, table decoration, personal utensils, linens, lighting, and furniture. Types of service, how it was served and by whom will be discussed.

Supplies Needed: Note taking materials.

15th Century Shoe Making: Pattern & Techniques
This shoe making workshop will introduce the basic techniques of making a leather field shoe. Based on a 15th Century design, students can make adaptations to match a variety of styles/time periods. Students will leave class with a completed pattern which is unique to their foot. All techniques for making this shoe will be discussed and demonstrated.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring 1 sock, which will be cut apart and any orthotics to be worn with the shoes.

Medieval Sauces
This is an overview of medieval sauces and their use. We will be actually constructing as many of the following sauces as time allows. Cameline, Green Sauce, White Sauce, Yellow Pepper Sauce, Black Pepper Sauce, and Mustard Sauce. The student should leave class with an understanding of the importance of sauces in Medieval Cookery and an idea of how those sauces were constructed.

Supplies Needed: Students should bring 6 small containers for taking home samples.
